Role Description

Point Foundation seeks a hands-on, systems-minded Controller to run the day-to-day operations of the finance department and build the infrastructure that will carry Point through its next stage of growth. This is a builder's role for a nonprofit accountant who enjoys both doing the work and improving how it gets done. The Controller will:

  • Manage expenditures and reconciliations.
  • Partner with the CFO to close each month and prepare financial reports.
  • Keep the organization audit-ready throughout the year.
  • Ensure scholarship funds reach Point's scholars accurately and on time.
  • Lead efforts to streamline financial processes and organization-wide data, including thoughtful use of automation and AI.

The role offers real room to grow, with the opportunity to develop into broader financial leadership as Point scales.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of accounting experience.
  • Years of nonprofit fund accounting experience.
  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent professional experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and QuickBooks Online (or similar accounting systems), along with the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience with AP and payment platforms such as Bill.com, and comfort using AI tools to streamline routine work.
  • A systems-first mindset, with an eye for how processes and tools can be improved or automated.
  • Strong skills in financial reporting and data analysis, including the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues.
  • Direct experience preparing for and coordinating an annual financial audit.
  • Strategic thinking about how finance operations scale, including familiarity with data governance practices.
  • A hands-on working style — comfortable owning day-to-day accounting work directly, not only overseeing it.
  • Experience supervising, coaching, or developing staff.
  • Discretion and sound judgment in handling sensitive financial and personal information.
  • Passionate about Point's mission and enthusiasm about communicating the organization's philosophy, mission, and values.
  • Commitment to advancing equity and inclusion in all areas of responsibility and across the organization.

Requirements

  • Preferred: degree in accounting or a related field.
  • Experience designing or rebuilding finance workflows.
  • Experience in a small finance department where wearing many hats is the norm.

Benefits

  • Pay range: This role is also eligible for an annual bonus based on performance.
  • Point pays 100% of employee health insurance premiums, with coverage for dependents available at additional cost.
  • Our full benefits package includes a 403(b) retirement plan with an employer match of up to 3%.

Core Competencies – Our Ways of Working

  • Ownership: Owns outcomes, not just tasks. Follows through on commitments or proactively resets expectations, and raises issues early and directly.
  • Learn & Adapt: Stays curious and self-aware. Seeks feedback, reflects on impact, and applies learnings as conditions change.
  • Focus & Excellence: Prioritizes the highest-impact work, delivers consistent high-quality results, and makes tradeoffs visible and intentional.
  • Trust & Belonging: Builds relationships grounded in respect, honesty, and inclusion. Engages candidly, assumes good intent, and addresses issues constructively.
  • Collaborate for Scale & Growth: Clarifies roles and handoffs, shares information transparently, commits to decisions once made, and designs sustainable, repeatable systems over "boutique" solutions.

1. HOW DO YOU PLAN YOUR DAY?

This is what this question poses: When do you focus and start working seriously? What are the hours you work optimally? Are you a night owl? A morning bird? Remote teams can be made up of people working on different shifts and around the world, so you won't necessarily be stuck in the 9-5 schedule if it's not for you...

2. HOW DO YOU USE THE DIFFERENT COMMUNICATION TOOLS IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS?

When you're working on a remote team, there's no way to chat in the hallway between meetings or catch up on the latest project during an office carpool. Therefore, virtual communication will be absolutely essential to get your work done...

3. WHAT IS "WORKING REMOTE" REALLY FOR YOU?

Many people want to work remotely because of the flexibility it allows. You can work anywhere and at any time of the day...

With this question, companies are looking to see what equipment they may need to provide you with and to verify how aware you are of what remote working could mean for you physically and logistically...

5. HOW DO YOU PROCESS INFORMATION?

Several years ago, I was working in a team to plan a big event. My supervisor made us all work as a team before the big day. One of our activities has been to find out how each of us processes information...

6. HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE CALENDAR AND THE PROGRAM? WHICH APPLICATIONS / SYSTEM DO YOU USE?

Or you may receive even more specific questions, such as: What's on your calendar? Do you plan blocks of time to do certain types of work? Do you have an open calendar that everyone can see?...

7. HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE FILES, LINKS, AND TABS ON YOUR COMPUTER?

Just like your schedule, how you track files and other information is very important. After all, everything is digital!...

8. HOW TO PRIORITIZE WORK?

9. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A MEETING AND PREPARE A MEETING? WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING DURING THE MEETING?

Just as communication is essential when working remotely, so is organization. Because you won't have those opportunities in the elevator or a casual conversation in the lunchroom, you should take advantage of the little time you have in a video or phone conference...

10. HOW DO YOU USE TECHNOLOGY ON A DAILY BASIS, IN YOUR WORK AND FOR YOUR PLEASURE?

This is a great question because it shows your comfort level with technology, which is very important for a remote worker because you will be working with technology over time...
