Under general supervision, performs semiskilled and skilled journey level work in the mechanical repair and maintenance of light and heavy gasoline, CNG, hybrid, electric and diesel driven automotive and other mechanical equipment.<br><br>This classification is assigned to the Turlock City Employees Association bargaining unit for labor relations purposes and is subject to overtime assignments.<br><br><br><strong style="color: inherit; font-style: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px;" data-pasted="true">Distinguishing Characteristics</strong><br><br>These classes are the entry and journey levels of the maintenance mechanic series. Positions in the class perform technical mechanical work. Work involves the application of mechanical knowledge and techniques.  <br><br><br><strong style="color: inherit; font-style: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px;" data-pasted="true">Supervision Received and Exercised</strong><br><br>Receives general supervision and direction from Fleet Services Manager, Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, Fleet Maintenance Mechanic, Sr. and from higher level technical.<br><br><ul style="margin-bottom: 3pt"><li>Inspect vehicles and equipment for needed repairs; perform necessary repairs as required or determined appropriate.</li><li>Lubricate automotive and power-driven equipment with the use of air pressure and lubrication tools.</li><li>Drain and refill crankcases; inspect and fill gearboxes with lubricants; replace lubricant fittings; maintain lubrication records; </li><li>Repair and maintenance of public transit buses.</li><li>Inspect, charge, and replace batteries.</li><li>Change and repair tires on light and heavy equipment.</li><li>Clean and wash motorized equipment.</li><li>Wash and otherwise keep shop and equipment in clean and orderly condition. Make necessary mechanical adjustments to automotive and other power-driven equipment.</li><li>May assist Equipment Mechanic in mechanical overhaul and repair work.</li><li>Maintain necessary records of time, materials, and parts used.</li><li>Pack and replace wheel bearings.</li><li>Replace shock absorbers, fan belts, radiator hoses and u-joints.</li><li>Perform general overhaul, tune-up and repair work on automobiles and related power-driven equipment.</li><li>Inspect, adjust and replace necessary units and parts including cooling, fuel and exhaust components.</li><li>May fabricate and modify parts and equipment.</li><li>Repair and overhaul brakes, ignition systems, electrical systems, transmission, differentials, and hydraulic systems; inspect, repair, overhaul and assemble automotive electrical equipment such as generators, distributors, magnetos and starters.</li><li>Perform inspections of automotive or mechanical equipment to determine repair needs of estimate cost of repairs; perform occasional metal work by cutting, welding other procedures.</li><li>Perform related duties as assigned.</li></ul><br><strong>Knowledge of:</strong><br><ul style="margin-bottom: 3pt;"><li>Servicing and minor maintenance of automotive and other power-driven equipment.</li><li>Oils, greases, and lubrication devices, and other tools and materials used in servicing equipment. The methods and materials used in cleaning and washing automotive equipment.</li><li>Ratings and sizes of tires for sedans, light and heavy trucks and equipment, tractors and heavy earth moving equipment.</li></ul><br><strong>Ability to:</strong><br><ul style="margin-bottom: 3pt;"><li>Learn principles and practices of auto maintenance</li><li>Learn proper safety techniques</li><li>Lubricate a wide variety of mechanical equipment.</li><li>Maintain time, mileage and servicing records.</li><li>Read manufacturer's lubrication charts.</li><li>Identify automotive parts and supplies.</li><li>Understand and carry out oral and written directions.</li><li>Learn the use of welding (gas and wire) procedures.</li><li>Maintain servicing records.</li></ul><br><br><strong>Experience and Training Guidelines</strong><br>Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge<br>and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:<br><br><strong>Experience:</strong><br>One year of journey level experience performing automotive and heavy-duty equipment maintenance and repair.<br><br><strong>Training:</strong><br>Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.<br><br><strong>Licenses:</strong><br><br>Possession of a valid, appropriate California Driver's License at the time of appointment, to be maintained as a condition of continued employment.  <br>Class B commercial driver’s license with air brakes, tank and passenger endorsements is desirable.<br>Ability to obtain an ASE Brake Certification within 18 months of employment.<p style="margin: 15px 0px; color: inherit; font-style: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px;" data-pasted="true"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">Physical Conditions:</strong></p><p style="margin: 15px 0px; color: inherit; font-style: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px;">Maintain the following physical abilities: see well enough to read, write and make observations, operate hand and power tools, vehicles and heavy equipment; hear well enough to converse on the radio, telephone and in person; bodily mobility to walk, bend, stand, crouch or climb for extended periods of time, operate assigned equipment and vehicles and perform heavy manual labor for extended periods; ability to lift up to 50 pounds (overhead); ability to tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing essential functions and be able to lift equipment as necessary.</p><br><span style="color: inherit; font-style: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-align: justify;">An eligibility list will be established from this recruitment that will be valid for six (6) months.
